In 1972, Terry Tolerton opened a single retail store in Alliance, Ohio -- marking the beginning of what is now the largest tire distributorship in the Northeastern United States.
Today, we at Terry's credit a loyal and highly skilled staff for our ability to adapt to change while staying true to Mr. Tolerton's founding principle: Success one customer at a time. While the most advanced technologies create seamless processes, it's through personal relationships that Terry's continues to deliver superior customer service.
"My father built the company on a belief in customer advocacy," says Terry's CEO Will Tolerton. "If our customers succeed, we succeed."
Before opening his first store, the elder Mr. Tolerton worked for Bridgestone Americas at an Alliance, Ohio-based distribution center that supplied dealers throughout the Eastern United States. Mr. Tolerton excelled at Bridgestone, at one point winning the corporate 'Salesman of the Year' award.
Once in business for himself, his character and personal qualities drove success. He worked endless hours, demanded accuracy and led by example.
Aptly, a desire to lower prices and offer a wider selection for his own retail customers prompted his move into wholesale distribution in 1982. Yet to reap wholesaler benefits, he needed commercial customers. So he bought a truck and began distributing to dealers in Akron, Cleveland and Youngstown.
In 1990, after graduating from the University of Kentucky, son Will Tolerton joined the family business and continued to expand wholesale operations, initially in Pennsylvania and Southern Ohio.
A year later, in 1991, the company opened its first distribution center in Alliance -- at a warehouse of 75,000 square feet. For the Tolerton family, it was a defining full-circle moment. The warehouse had been the same facility where the elder Mr. Tolerton had worked during his Bridgestone days. Nearly 20 years later, he moved back into the same office. Meanwhile, the expansion in distribution signaled the future direction of growth under Will Tolerton.
In November 2010, after two decades of steady expansion, Will Tolerton entered into a partnership with Talisman Capital Partners, headed by Cardinal Health founder Bob Walter.
The partnership with Talisman set the stage for transformational growth as a leading regional tire distributor.
Only three months later, in February 2011, Terry's acquired the tire wholesaler Summit of New England with its strategically located warehouses in Brockton, MA; Nashua, NH and Westbrook, ME.
In December 2011, Terry's announced a second major deal: The acquisition of Englewood Tire Wholesale (ETW), a provider of more associate dealer programs than any other tire distributor in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.
With the addition of Englewood Tire Wholesale's four East Coast distribution centers, Terry's Tire Town now stocks more than one million tires in all sizes and brands, housed in 11 state-of-the-art warehouses across the Eastern and Midwestern United States. The newest distribution center, located in Taunton, MA, is a combination of the best practices of the entire company.
Today, Terry's Tire Town provides leading and consistent wholesale distribution services in 12 states, including the administration of American Car Care Centers (ACCC) and Eco Express programs.
Amid this amazing growth period for Terry's, an equally amazing commitment to Terry Tolerton's core values remains unchanged. At the end of the day, it's still about enabling the customer's success.
